As magical talent - and education in general - is reserved only for the wealthy, and the wealthy are directly responsible for so many of the horrors of the poor, she is terrified. When she learns that the wizards she attacked are seeking her out, she runs to find refuge among the Thieves, an underground community of criminals and general ne'er-do-wells. Sounds inoffensive and easy right? I'm not going to do a fakeout here and say 'oh but it's so much more, look at this subtext' - this is a book of inherently easy language, clearly defined characters, walking down well trodden paths. On a narrative level, it's hardly breaking new ground; this is a simple story about a girl going to wizard school.

You could (and should) hand it to a thirteen year old and they'd be able to read it with ease.but it's so much more. See, I constantly tell my writer friends the same thing. The world sucks, but writers are in a very unique position - because people turn to fiction to escape their shitty life situation, writers have the opportunity to show solidarity to the downtrodden. Writers can offer other possibilities, suggest different ways the world could be through either statement or description. Writers can prescribe change.

This, funnily enough, is what I was looking for when I said 'fuck it, I'm just reading female writers, or at least, female protagonists, for a while.' I wasn't looking for someone jawdropping like Ursula LeGuin. I wasn't looking for someone to get heavy and depressing like Margaret Atwood.

I wasn't looking for the gutwrenching honesty and pain of Octavia Butler. I wanted this series. Canavan wrote a traditional fantasy novel trilogy from a female perspective.

In doing so, she showed the difference between a woman and a man's experience, both in the world she created, and in the industry she wrote in. There's hunky older dudes in this book, there's a dismissal of 'simple' warrior magics, there's all these blatant reversals of traditional gender roles in play.

But there's also stark realities of a patriarchal world. Women in this feel vulnerable, not through their own weakness (which trust me, is not in play in this series), but through societal expectations. Women are sold into slavery, face issues like rape and abuse, and generally have a much harder time than men in similar situations. But it's not about that. It's fantastic, in that this series is utterly up front about what it is - a simple battle of good versus evil - but has all of these fantastic themes of being an outsider running through everything, because Canavan, as a female fantasy writer, has hardly lived in the mainstream at any point in her life. These themes won't impress anybody looking for the next great feminist novel.

They're not meant to. They're insidious and that's brilliant. I'll give you an example, and I'll leave character names out. A gay character visits a group of people who are very, like, Westboro Baptist about sexuality. About a lot of things, actually.

A conversation occurs where this character winds up saying 'honestly I know this is important but I just want to leave, this is all kinds of fucked up and I don't want to witness this shit any more.' Another character says 'okay, yeah, let's peace out, you gotta feel comfortable.' On the way back, in conversation, we learn that the main group, the viewpoint society that is so clearly European Fantasy Kingdom, is also real homophobic. That's not a very big statement to make at all, right? It's not a surprise that 'some people are homophobic' - and again, that's not the theme of the series - but it adds to this undercurrent running through the whole narrative.

Everything, ultimately, is saying the same message, over and over again, in an incredibly blunt yet surprisingly subtle way, to shift the reader's perceptions and opinion to stop being so damn bigoted. The continued viewpoints of outsiders reinforce this message over and over again, but it's never (and I can't say this enough) obtuse and blunt.

It's not a call to action. It's just a very simple message, in a very simple book series, that I am very surprised I loved so much. 'Stop thinking of people different to you as worse than you.' Not hard to understand, right? This series may not be for you, and that's fine. Give it to a thirteen year old. Flick through in a day or so.

It's not a gourmet meal of caviar and stuffed zucchini flowers. It's expertly crafted, masterfully seasoned, Julia Child quality chicken fingers. There's no pressure to love it, but the only way to hate this is if you yourself are the problem. Me, I love me some chicken fingers from time to time. They're light.

Although I’m a huge fan of fantasy and magic, I haven’t had the opportunity to read many books of this topic, and the trilogy of The Black Magician by Trudi Cavanan was one of them. I picked up the first book, The Magicians' Guild, only to try it out. I didn’t know the synopsis, but the cover was pretty interesting.

Yes I know, its white, and only have a person with a hood, but it got my attention, so I bought it, and I read it. The first book, The Magicians' Guild, takes place in a fantasy world, in a city called Imardin, where there are different kinds of social classes, the nobles or rich, the commoners or poor, and the magicians. The Magicians are special people who, naturally, have powers and can do things that normal people can’t.

All of them come from rich families, and receive special education. That is why when a poor girl called Sonea is able to do some magic, they are desperate to find her. She is in danger if she doesn’t receive the adequate education, but Sonea, like many other poor people who live in the city's slums, hate the magicians. The first book is slow, I must say that, and what I mean with slow is that something that shouldn’t have taken more than 3 chapters, is in fact half of the first book. That is a big downside for many, especially for those who prefer books with a plot that doesn’t get stuck with the same thing over and over again.

So, if you’re able to read book one entirely, you will find out that the story is a lot more rich in the next books than it seemed at the beginning, and that in fact is pretty good. I really liked the second book, The Novice, which reminded me Harry Potter, but it is not so great as book three, The High Lord, which is the best of all. The story gets complicated, with more magic, new cities, wars, dark magic, secrets, and why not, love. Yes, there is romance, it is not the main theme of the book, but at the end, it takes some importance. The only thing I didn’t like was the ending.

Those who have read the series will know why. There is another trilogy, The Traitor Spy, which is a sequel, so takes place in the same world but some years later. Naturally, many characters from this trilogy appear in the new one. I haven’t read it, and I’m not planning to do it, since I hated with all my heart the ending of the first trilogy.

There is a pre-sequel and stand-alone novel, The Magician's Apprentice, which I will read if I have a chance. In conclusion, I liked the series, the story is not the best, so don’t compare it with famous fantasy books, but at least is good enough to have a great time reading. Barely good enough for 1 star. I have picked up this trilogy and 'Age of the Five' trilogy by the same author as a bit of light summer reading, since I love good fantasy, and this was recommended as such. I have since regretted the wasted money and time. Tl;dr - do not bother with these books, and probably not with the author overall - not unless you like reading about brainless, willpower-less, useless females who tend to lust after their older teacher/instructor figures.

Tl;dr - do not bother with these books, and probably not with the author overall - not unless you like reading about brainless, willpower-less, useless females who tend to lust after their older teacher/instructor figures. Based on the fact that there are at least 6 books by this author with this motif, I'd say she has a fetish for this and writes out her own fantasies.

My main problem with the trilogy overall, is that the main female lead is not acting intelligently, not standing up for herself, and despite being magically gifted, spends most of the time being useless. There are a lot of male authority figures in the book, and while I love reading about well-written characters of either gender, when the main character is a female that essentially goes along with the flow and does what a bunch of older men say, and does not think for herself, it gets boring really quickly. In addition, there is a lot of 'filler' - random things which happen which do not affect the outcome of anything, and chapters and chapters of what should be Chekhov's guns, but appear to be just wall decorations: it is as if the author wanted the books to be longer than they are, and put in random ramblings. The plot is weak and formulaic, and the storytelling is not compelling. I do not recommend either this trilogy, or 'Age of the Five' trilogy by this author.

In fact, I do not think I will bother reading anything by her after these 6 books. This is a perfectly average enjoyable fantasy trilogy. The writing is good, the characters aren't ground breaking, but the story is solid enough. One of the nice things about this trilogy was that it has obviously been planned as a full story arc, so you don't get that effect of the first book having the story finished, and the second two having the 'we wrote these because the first one did well' problem that some trilogys have. I'm re-reading it at the moment having read it before, and in a second read the first book suffers some pacing issues at the start, since I knew where the story was headed and had forgotton it took so long to get there. The second book I get a little bored with Dannyl chapters, although again that could be because I read it before so it didn't have the same sense of discovery. Probably the best way I can describe this book is like eating fantasy bread. It's nice and comfortable, but nothing exciting or different.

I would recommend this to a friend if they wanted an easy read. LOL I REMEMBER BEING BRIEFLY BUTTHURT BECAUSE I SHIPPED HER WITH ANOTHER GUY, BUT I STILL ENJOYED HER HERO'S JOURNEY. It was the first ever trilogy of Trudi that i've read. The story flows smoothly, truly unpredictable. You'll find yourself loving every character and falling inlove with most of the characters personalities.

I've read the first and second book twice and the third Three times!!! My personal fave is Akkarin. He is a very good friend ( to Lorren - I envy their friendship) and the best leader.
